Volunteer Program to Start

We're Looking for a Few Good Friends!

The Nature Center is pleased to announce the start of an "official" volunteer program. Since its inception, the Center has always had volunteers - a small group of enthusiastic and generous individuals who have offered their time, various skills and expertise to help the Nature Center fulfill its mission. Volunteers serve on the Board of Directors, and have comprised various committees. Volunteers have taken part in Trail Maintenance Days, helped with special events, and have conducted members programs. They have helped with library and office functions, greeted school children, tended our gardens, and assisted with summer camp. Who are these volunteers? Moms, Dads, grandparents, kids and teens!

We've always needed volunteers and have always appreciated their help, but never has the Nature Center had a volunteer coordinator or a formal program to recruit, train, or provide support for those who wish to help in some way. The Board of Directors set a goal to establish one this year.

As a catalyst to this endeavor, Sylvia Barkafski, Nature Center member and experienced volunteer, volunteered to be Volunteer Coordinator. Congratulations (and thank you), Sylvia! Sylvia has been extremely helpful in formulating the plan, objectives and timeline for the program.

The Center will be recruiting volunteers during this spring's open house weekends. If you're interested, plan to attend our kick-off lecture and informational meeting on Sunday, April 5 at 1:30 p.m. The slide lecture will give you an introduction to Fair Hill History and the Nature Center, followed by a brief overview of the volunteer program and areas in which we need the most help.

Why volunteer? It's a great way to meet new friends, spend some of your free time in a beautiful setting, expand your knowledge of our local environment, and help the Nature Center provide opportunities for students and citizens to learn about environmental issues and stewardship.

Volunteers receive a tee-shirt after volunteering 15 hours, learning opportunities, and special volunteer gatherings.

We hope to see you on April 5. Please call ahead of time to let us know you will be coming. And by all means, bring a friend!
