For most students attending Cecil County Public Schools, this is the first year they visit the Fair Hill Nature Center. During the program first graders are introduced to Fair Hill habitats and the plants and animals that live here. The program focuses on the survival needs of organisms and how they are designed to meet these basic needs. Following an introduction at the Nature Center where they are "transformed" into native animals using "Magic Badges," students hike through field and forest habitats and visit a stream in search of the things their organisms need to survive. Sensory activities and role playing take place along the way. Join first graders as they investigate Fair Hill animals and their habitats!

Note to parents: If your child is your "leader" as you experience this "virtual field trip," read each paragraph aloud. Text blocks in green are directed toward your child to stimulate discussion and reflection. When indicated, follow directions to reveal answers.

Students are welcomed on their very first field trip to the Nature Center. Before their outdoor experience, teachers review concepts covered in the CCPS science unit. They distinguish between things that are alive and things that are non-living and discuss the basic needs which living things must meet in order to survive.
