SPECIAL APPEAL – We have raised approximately $4K.

ARTIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – Mario attended this and will report at next BOD meeting.

NATURE SCHOOL REPORT – Holly Hannum

The Nature School staff is busy these days with kindergarten outreach.  These programs will be completed on February 25 unless we have snow closings, so far so good.  The first week of March will be used for make-ups.  Outdoor classes are scheduled to begin on March 15.

The baby snakes and their Dad, Cornelius, will be the guests at Donuts for Dad at North East Elementary School on February 18.  The video will be shown at that time.

Cathryn, Janet, and I will attend the Maryland Association of Outdoor Educators Conference in Ocean City on February 4-5.

A series of preschool programs are in the works as part of the IMLS grant.  The first one about animals in winter will take place this Saturday

Taps will be set up for maple sugaring in early February or as soon as the coldest weather breaks.  The member’s workshop is scheduled for March 5.  A group of 29 girl scouts want to attend that day.  I have proposed an additional date for them so that they don’t fill up the 5th preventing members from attending.

I am continuing to work with Ford Hamilton on contributions from the area Lions Clubs.  He expects Perryville and Elkton to contribute.  He said that Elkton Lions wants to start a Fair Hill club.   I offered the center as a possible initial meeting spot.  Mr. Hamilton wanted to join at the benefactor level ($500).   Our brochure says that he could do so on a credit card.  We really need to make that happen or take it off the brochure.

We have been asked to participate in an environmental field day at North East Middle School on April 20th.  We will be working with science teacher Allison Verbanis on this project.

Carol Krawcyzk, landscape professor at the U of D, is working on some research regarding child behavior in specific outdoor environments.  Originally a summer camp parent, Carol has been following our work for two years.  She observed some of our programs over this past summer and will be bringing in some preschoolers for programs in late spring for analysis.  She will be statistically quantifying the validity of using specific spaces for maximizing various learning opportunities.  I am hopeful that at some point her work will be useful in grant writing for our programs.
