Three Cheers for Jerry!
Editor's Note: Jerry Newman was recently nominated by the Fair Hill Nature Center for Cecil County's Most Beautiful Person Award. Though Jerry didn't receive the award this year, we'd like to congratulate him for being our Most Beautiful Person! Below is a copy from his nomination letter.
Jerry Newman is being nominated for a second year by the Fair Hill Nature Center because of our desire to see him receive the top honor among Maryland's "Most Beautiful People." Jerry's value as a volunteer is characterized by one word - steadfast. Even though Jerry has spearheaded high profile campaigns such as the $55,000 improvement project for the Rising Sun Library, we nominate him for the highest recognition to emphasize the importance of someone who commits time, energy and resources over long periods. His commitment to the restoration of blue birds in Cecil County has spanned 26 years as he has volunteered his talents and expertise to the Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area, the Fair Hill Environmental Foundation and to Wildlife Habitat Council. The number of boxes that Jerry has built, set in the field, and monitored count in the hundreds. He has taught individual youngsters, youth groups and the general public at Fair Hill Nature Center the precious value of the blue bird and how to build homes for them. His work with the Wildlife Habitat Council will be instrumental in attracting the elusive blue bird to the Woodlawn area wildlife preserve being developed and where Jerry has already begun setting boxes. If you see a blue bird in Cecil County, it probably was hatched in one of Jerry's blue bird boxes. Beyond that, Jerry has worked hundreds of hours making repairs on the Fair Hill Nature Center building and, again, has been steadfast over 10 years in donating time as a board member and committee worker. Most recently Jerry has worked diligently to complete the outside painting of the Nature Center so that it won't face another winter with bare trim. The Rising Sun Lion's Club has benefited from Jerry's long-term commitment as well where he has served on community service committees for 20 years, most recently serving as Chairman of the Scholarship Committee which helps students attend Cecil County Community College. He serves as a volunteer at Janes United Methodist Church, Calvert Nursing Home, and is on the Cecil County Library Board of Trustees. We respectfully request the highest award for our nominee, because to award Jerry is to award the ideal volunteer - the one who is steadfast.
