President's Column

As always, activities at the Nature Center pick up in the springtime. We have not been hibernating this winter but we, like good little earthworms, have to work really hard in the immediate future to get ready for Spring's Spectaculars. The Earth Day Birthday event is expanding to a point where we need lots of volunteers. Primarily, we need people who will raise the funds, do the walk, and turn them in. We want to surpass our previous record of $6,000 raised from the walk. We need team captains, each of whom would recruit other people to walk with them, and sponsors (minimum of $10 but much more is hoped for), as well as people to work in the other events which are planned for the day. We need bicyclists and equestrian fund-raisers as well.

We had planned to move our fundraising event to the fall last year but ran into conflict with the United Way fundraising period. Therefore, we have moved it back to the Spring. Unfortunately, we are competing with March of Dimes and other walks as usual so that makes our job even more difficult. We do have the prettiest and most pleasant hiking/riding environment of any of them and we are also planning other events which make it a wonderful family festival (see Spring Programs).

If we are to continue expanding programs as envisioned by our Board and staff, we need to expand our fundraising activities as well. We think we are on the right track with having events which are family fun fests as well as fund-raisers. We will soon be welcoming new Board members and look forward to their contributions to the Nature Center and the Environmental Foundation's work. This is not a closed society by any stretch of the imagination. We have committees upon which all members are invited to participate and we frequently have vacancies on the Board of Directors which need to be filled. The logical place to find new Directors is from our volunteers and committee members. Please give the Nature Center a call or call me at 410-398-7400 (day), or email me at (dsclower@iximd.com) if you have any interest in participating in these activities. The Board members will be happy to tell you that we receive more benefits from our efforts than we have to give. The combination of working to save the planet and teaching children to help is unbeatable. See you at the Nature Center.
