Third Annual March For Parks Sunday, April 25

Wanted: Walkers, Horseback Riders, and Mountain Bikers

The Fair Hill Nature Center is busy planning its third annual March for Parks event scheduled for Sunday, April 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. This is an important fundraising event for the Nature Center. Revenues from the walkathon directly support our Outdoor School and Nature Center operations. Please plan on joining us! There are several ways you can participate:

Become a marcher! Call the Nature Center to register and we'll send you a pledge form. There is a minimum of $10.00 in pledges to enter the walk (or a registration fee of $10.00 if you choose not to collect pledges). Collect donations from supporters such as friends, relatives, coworkers, neighbors, or others interested in helping the Nature Center and Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area. Collect the donations at the same time supporters sign up. Bring all contributions to the registration tables on April 25. Checks should be made payable to March for Parks.

Make the event a Family Day! Designate one person in the family to be the marcher with pledges of $10.00 or more. Other family members may accompany the marcher for a registration fee of $2.00 per person (kids under age 7 free). Walkers follow an easy 4.5 mile walk through some of the most beautiful parts of the Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area (an alternate shorter loop will also be available). March on mountain bikes, or on horseback! As in the past, equestrians and mountain bikers are welcome to march on specially designed trails.

Become a Team Captain. If you think you can recruit 10 marchers who will each be able to collect at least $10.00 in pledges, become a team captain! Team captains receive a free T-shirt. All teams will have their pictures taken before the march. Team captains are also invited to a special evening and informal dinner at the Nature Center on May 12 to collect prizes for team categories and receive team pictures. Please contact Bob Carroll, Recruitment Chair at (410) 398-3576 (home) or (302) 831-1372 (work) for more information. Or e-mail Bob at rbc@udel.edu. Check here for a list of this years' captains.

Become a "Root" Sponsor! Join other local businesses, organizations and families by becoming a sponsor of our event. Please contact Dennis Clower, Sponsorship Chair at (410) 398-4700 or clowerden@aol.com for more information. Check here for a list of this years' sponsors.

Win a prize! If you raise $20.00 or more, you will receive a commemorative water bottle. If you raise $30.00 or more, you will receive a T-shirt.** All marchers get a Fair Hill Nature Center button. Special prizes for top fund-raisers in several categories will also be given away. You will receive more information on prize incentives when you register.

When you call to register, specify that you will be walking, on a bike or on horseback and we'll send you the appropriate information.

Hot dogs, beverages, and baked goods will be available for hungry marchers, and our gift store will be open.

Registration/Check-In. The March will begin at 1 p.m. with hiker registration at Fair Hill Nature Center, mountain bikers start from the Black Bridge Road parking lot off Appleton Road, and equestrians will enter by Entrance Road 3 off Rt. 273.

This year the Fair Hill Nature Center hopes to raise $5,000. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be targeted for Nature Center and Park projects. But we need your help to make this event succeed!

March for Parks is America's only national walk event for parks. Organized by the National Parks and Conservation Association (NPCA), March for Parks raises awareness and funds for America's national, state, and local parks. All money raised stays at the local level for park projects identified by each organizing group.

Local corporate sponsors of the Fair Hill March for Parks are Cecil County Chamber of Commerce, County Bank, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Maryland Materials, People's Bank, and W.L. Gore and Associates.

**The first 75 marchers with $30.00 in pledges will receive T-shirts on April 25. You may call the Nature Center as soon as you get $30.00 in pledges to reserve a shirt. In the event that inventory of March for Parks merchandise is depleted, rain checks or a different prize of equal value may be substituted.
